Canal water could return this winter

STOVER Canal Trust is currently seeking grant aid for its two-year project to rewater Ventiford Basin with the aim of seeing flood water refill the basin over this coming winter along with some overflow from Ventiford Brook. The two-year scheme incorporates the building of a small clay-cored dam at the south end of the basin, lining the bed to make it watertight and making good the granite walls; landscaping work will follow the main works. Our main picture shows the canal in flood in March 2016. To mark the 225th anniversary of the canal reaching its terminus at Ventiford Basin a biennial open weekend was held last

September and a replica wagon placed on site on granite rails by Sibelco volunteers, along with boards showing future plans for the area. Hundreds of visitors attended and a special ceremony was held at the graving dock lock to mark the completion of its restoration project with a plaque unveiled by Cllr George Gribble. This work, supported in part

by Tesco shoppers through their Bags of Help scheme, was recognised in the restoration and historic environment category of the Canal and Rivers Trust annual Living Waterways Awards.

All works along the 1.7-mile waterway are carried out by the Stover Canal Trust, an
