SpousesinBusiness and Employment | 33

Recruit for Spouses (RFS) exists to help and support the wives and partners of our Armed Forces into work. As an organisation, we understand the practical challenges military spouses face, which often result in less opportunity to earn own income, we also understand how spouses struggle to build up experience and go for promotions like their civilian counterparts. This is where RFS can help.

Ageneric CV Is the first point of call and we can help you with that but if you don’t have aCVthere are other organisations like the RBLI who are geared to help you, if you are unsure about where to start, it’s agreat place to help you shape your CV.Once you have aCVRFS can help you to write it for aspecific role.

1. Don’t over think it! When we start writing aCVweoften find ourselves having to make excuses or even be dishonest to try and hide the fact that we are amilitary spouse, in fact, through the Armed Forces Covenant, there are hundreds of employers who support spousal employment and are actively seeking to employ spouses. We have many jobs on our website that are home based.

2. Start to network –local groups, could you turn your hobby into ajob could you sit on aboard to offer your help or even volunteer to create the right opportunities, new jobs are often about finding yourself in the right place.

3. If you believe childcare is aproblem in your area, RFS are partnering with the NFF to address this please get in touch to find out more.

Finally, itcan at times be extremely isolating so please reach out to us RFS are often running series of workshops in your area so please keep an eye on our website. Also, please do get in touch, we are always happy to help!

From the employer’s Perspective, with Amazon

The adjectives that spring to mind when Ithink of military spouses are: determined, organised, resourceful and resilient. These are attributes that many employers look for in prospective employees yet many overlook the ready- made talent pool available within the military community.Itisafact that military spouses are often over educated for their current job, but stay because there is nothing else suitable nearby.Multiple moves can wreak havoc on aCVand it can be disheartening to have to start from the beginning again, and again, in a new location.

Iunderstand! As amilitary spouse who has moved house (and country) four times in the last three years, Ihave personally experienced all of those challenges. Iamincredibly fortunate to lead the Military Program at Amazon where we actively seek veterans and military spouses to work in our Customer Fulfilment organisation. We have flexible, virtual and portable careers around the country, so regardless if you are looking for afull time career, anhourly paid position or more flexible seasonal opportunities there could be something for you at Amazon. All our jobs are advertised on our website and they are constantly being updated, have alook at amazon.jobs.
