All of this effort for little reward may be affecting our emotional

health too. According to our survey, a quarter of British women feel they have no control over their weight. A further 20 percent admit where their weight is concerned, they’re at the end of their tether.

The problem with fad diets… Our survey confirms many women often follow fad diets, with 59 percent admitting they’ve given up a particular type of food without consulting a dietician. However this isn’t recommended because some fad diets

require you to cut out foods such as dairy products, wheat or gluten. And avoiding certain types of foods altogether can leave you deficient in some of the nutrients your body needs to function effectively.

Diet and DNA You could say the problem with weight-loss diets in general is that they assume everyone is the same in terms of what and how much they should eat to lose or maintain their weight. But what most diets don’t take into account is each of us has a different genetic make-up – remember that person you know who can eat what they like and never gain weight while you watch your diet most of the time but struggle to maintain a healthy weight? This is where genetic testing for weight management comes in.

Genetic testing can help take the guesswork out of dieting, especially if you’ve been struggling to lose weight or maintain weight loss. Our survey found 45 percent of women blame their genes for their weight and body shape. Seven out of 10 also say they’d be keen to find out how their genes impact their weight. Genetic testing has been around for a while, but it’s only recently

become widely available and affordable for everyone. So here at LloydsPharmacy we exclusively offer a Weight Management DNA Testing Kit from genetic testing specialists myDNA. And at just £59, it’s one of the cheapest on the market.

How does it work? Your kit comes with a swab that you use to swipe the inside of your cheek (you can take your swab yourself at home or we’ll do it for you at your local LloydsPharmacy). Then all you have to do is register your kit online and send your swab to myDNA’s laboratory in the post.

Once the lab receives your swab it’s analysed to

establish how your body is programmed to respond to different types of food and drink, different medicines and which type of exercise is best suited to your genetic make-up. It takes the lab and scientific team 10 - 15

working days to process your results. When they’re ready you’ll receive a personalised report designed to help you understand how your genes can influence a variety of weight-loss factors, as well as a nutritional breakdown and a suggested diet to suit your body type, including a recommended food guide and sample menus for each meal of the day. Our Weight Management DNA Testing Kit is

available to order online, or you can buy it in store. For more information please visit LloydsPharmacy.com/myDNA.

Gene testing The Weight Management DNA Testing kit looks for genes known to influence the following factors:

• Your body size and weight • Your ability to maintain and lose weight

•How your body stores and processes dietary fats

• Your risk of raised cholesterol and triglyceride levels (triglycerides are a form of dietary fat that, like cholesterol, is important for heart health)
