Health Pharmacy services Prescription costs
If you live in England and you take prescription medicines on a regular basis, there may be a way to make them more affordable
As readers in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland know, NHS prescriptions in these parts of the country are free. But if you live in England you may have to pay for your prescriptions. And if you take prescription medicines regularly the costs can add up. However some people living in England may not have to
pay. If you’re 16 or younger, aged 16 - 18 and in full-time education or if you’re 60 or older, you can get your prescriptions for free. People receiving certain benefits are eligible for free
prescriptions too, and women who are pregnant or have given birth in the past year can get a maternity exemption certificate to get free prescriptions. Others who have certain medical conditions may also be eligible for a medical exemption certificate, which means all their prescriptions are free.
Paying in advance If you’re not exempt from paying for prescriptions the cost for each item on your prescription is currently £8.60. But you may be able to pay less if you pay in advance by applying for a prescription prepayment certificate (PPC), also known as a prepaid prescription card. These currently cost £29.10 for a three-month PPC or £104 for a 12-month PPC. So if you need to pay for two or more prescription items a month, a PPC can save you money.
10 All About You The easiest way to apply for your NHS PPC is to apply
online at
apps.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/ppcwebsales/patient.do. Your Pharmacist can also give you a FP95 form for applying for a PPC through the post. Some pharmacies can issue your PPC in person if you take them the FP95 form. Alternatively you can apply over the phone by calling 0300 330 1341 and paying with your bank card.
Visit your local LloydsPharmacy to discuss any aspect of your prescriptions or to find out more about pre-paid prescription cards. Find your nearest LloydsPharmacy by using the Store Locator at
LloydsPharmacy.com.
How much could you save?
The amount of money you can save with a PPC depends upon how many prescriptions you need each month. PPCs start saving you money when you need two or
more items each month. If you get four prescription items a month, for example, you can save more than £300 a year with the 12-month plan.
• Please note: all prices were correct at the time of writing but increases may have been applied in April 2018.
