FEEDING THE SENSES INSIDE THE GETTY MUSEUM

by tony reverditto If you’re looking for a one-stop, day of cultural experiences coupled with a gor-

geous dining encounter, look no further than The Getty Museum inLos Angeles. It’s definitely a place at which you can have both…And then some. The hilltop museum features a charming eatery called “The Restaurant” and it’s the perfect way to either fuel-up before your tour, or to relax and enjoy a drink and a delicious meal after a day of viewing the world-class art inside. Southern California’s J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center in Los Angeles

is hands down, the most stunning cultural center in the city. Aside from the magnificent location, the brilliant architecture and unparalleled city viewpoints, the museum houses a vast collection of pre-20th century European paintings, drawings, sculptures, illuminated manuscripts and decorative arts, as well as 19th and 20th century American, Asian, and European photography. Part of the wonder of the Richard Meier designed complex is that all of the galleries, libraries, offices, and gardens offer clear sightlines between interior and exterior spaces, allowing visitors to move in and out of the five gallery pavilions with ease and know exactly where they are at all times. Exterior courtyard spaces include unique fountains and waterscapes, featuring a variety of native foliage including California Native Oaks, as well as succulent plant and cactus gardens to the south. The architectural stone—1.2 million square feet of it—is one of the most remarkable elements of the complex. The cleft-cut, fossilized travertine is beige-colored, textured and inviting as it catches the bright Southern California sun, reflecting sharply during morning hours and emitting a honeyed warmth in the afternoon. It is an experience that is exciting visually and at the same time calming to the senses…Truly an architectural marvel and a jewel in California’s crown.
