It would appear that I’m guilty of being yet another bitchy, Hillcrest queen...Well okay, maybe that’s not completely accurate. When I first heard the news that our wonderful gay community in Hillcrest was getting an additional bar, my reaction was quick and judgy (despite my name not being Judy): “Seriously? A new bar! Gag me!” Perhaps I didn’t use those precise words, well

maybe except for the last ones. I admit it, those words I used exactly, and just last night. I judged a book by its cover or more appropriately, I judged a bar by its red-paneled outside. Shame on me. When I sat down to discuss insideOUT, the aforementioned bar, with MO’s Universe Market- ing Director, Lukas Volk, I really only had two main questions in mind: “Why another bar in the bar-heavy area?” and “What will make insideOUT standout from Urban MO’s, Gossip Grill, Hillcrest Brewery, and Baja Betty’s?” I never really got the opportunity to ask these questions. I wasn’t with Lukas for even five minutes before he made an executive decision: In order for me to understand insideOUT and the motivation behind it, I would have to physically see insideOUT. And he was absolutely correct. I instantly knew

THE INSIDE SCOOP ON INSIDEOUT

why I had to personally experience the venue in order to appreciate it. As soon as I stepped inside the roofless space, not only was I instantly outside again (insideOUT, get it?) In a word…I was shooketh. Described by Matt Ramon, who developed the concept and name of the new spot, as a “Casual, elegant restaurant,” insideOUT, or iO, is all of that and so much more, complete with a heated boi pond and a waterfall. Further, the atrium is surrounded by 13 live/work towers, offering floor-to-ceiling glass windows, a dining room, bar, a switchback walkway with relaxing seating nooks and even more surprises to come. The “sexy, chic and refined destination” will be managed by Paris Sukomi Max, and is “the ideal choice for those craving fine dining, craft cocktails and relaxation in style.” Better yet, iO has pulled from its LGBTQ community resources to create this fun, fresh and elevated experience. Specifically, custom tables for iO were built by

Sven Hasselberg, a local furniture designer, while Gossip Grill’s very own and Hillcrest favorite, Moe Girton, developed the craft cocktail menu. Maryjo Testa, a member from Gossip Grill’s original crew, will head the culinary portion of the restaurant, promises to serve options that may be harder to find
