FISCHERSPOONER’S CASEY by joel martens


Classically trained Warren Fischer and performance artist Casey Spooner, met in art school working on a video and performance art class project. Fischerspooner came to be shortly thereafter, emerging at the turn of the millennium inside New York City’s Astor Place Starbucks, as they cobbled together an impromptu musical performance of their song “Indian Cab Driver.” Three successful albums later (#1, in 2001, Odyssey in 2005 and Entertainment in 2009 and the dynamic duo is still at it, making bound- ary crushing music that has changed the landscape of electronic music. Never just a band, the two rode the electronica wave and helped to


define a movement and while doing it, they managed to stay free of the confines of the category by being uncompromisingly unique. They created soundscapes, layering their music with haunting vocals and digitized tracks, all the while peppering their shows with performance art, along with compelling visual trimmings. Fast forward to 2018 and their latest collaboration: Undoubtedly, Sir


is their most powerful album yet…actually maybe “creation” is a better descriptor. In the face of the current wave of conservatism, it’s unabash- edly queer, unapologetically erotic, with an emotional depth that offers honesty, immediacy and a rawness that the pair has only shown glimpses of before. Fischer and Spooner were a winning combination back in 2000 and though the content and character of their music has evolved, as Casey Spooner jokingly mentioned to this writer, “The process hasn’t really changed that much over the years.”
