Round Hole Square Peg is an open call, juried photography exhibition conceived with the intent to question and acquire a new LGBTQ visual aesthetic for the 21st century, featuring artists who are on the vanguard of creating the next wave of queer art and soul. Hundreds of images, from nine countries were evaluated by Judges Laura Aguilar, Paul Bridgewater, Zackary Drucker, Bert Green, Robert Summers and Phil Tarley in order to select the 50 artist-photographers who are represented, in what will be one of the largest queer, group photography exhibitions ever staged. The exhibition is hosted by Writer-Curator-Artist Advisor Philip Tarley, a fellow of the American Film Institute, a member of the Photographic Arts Council and an artist member of the Los Angeles Art Association. He curates exhibitions in Los Angeles and writes about contemporary art for Fabrik Magazine. His writing and photography have also appeared in the LA Times, the LA Weekly, The WOW Report and American Photo Magazine, as well as his book, Going Down On Cuba.

This year, they are planning a St. Patrick’s Day closing night reception for the show, benefitting the AIDS/LifeCycle organization, featuring the men of Starfucker Magazine, go-go boys, drag queens hustling tips for the charity, with Mixmaster DJ Paul V of Dragstrip fame spinning for the night. A portion of all closing night sales will benefit AIDS/LifeCycle, which raises awareness, provides a life-affirming experience for people with HIV/AIDS and funds the work of the Los Angeles LGBT Center, providing free medical care, testing and AIDS prevention services. Tarley explained why he feels it is so important to showcase the LGBTQ com- munity’s artistic vision. “The world is changing for LGBTQ people...in 2018, dark Trumpian clouds are forming, threatening to roll back hard-won civil rights and the religious right continues to ramp up their homophobic and transphobic attacks,” he said. “By showing positive, sincere images that reflect true queer lives, LGBTQ people can stay visible in a world that wants them to disappear. Having a strong presence in front of a large audience helps the queer community defy and resist negative stereotypes. Ultimately, artistic photography triumphs over hate by showing the love and beauty in the lives of the LGBTQ community.” “Round Hole Square Peg is grateful to the City of West Hollywood for supporting the freedom to mount this historic exhibition,” said Tarley. When asked what the criteria is for narrowing down the entries for exhibit, he had this
