APPRENTICESHIPS
FEATURE
Here are just some of the benefits we’ve seen using apprentices at MVIS and Bartco UK:
• Improve staff retention: Apprentices tend to be extremely loyal so you’ll boost your workforce for the long term.
• Fuel innovation: The fresh perspective apprentices can bring, especially to innovative businesses in technical sectors like ITS, can provide a massive commercial advantage.
leaders believe apprenticeship and training schemes will increase workforce productivity and revenues. MVIS has always been passionate about the training and
development of its close-knit team and in 2013 we took on Dom Bridge as our first apprentice. Dom is now our Operations Supervisor and his success inspired us to take on six more apprentices in recent years, including Tom Berry, who joined as an admin and sales apprentice in February 2017, and Cain Gregory, our latest apprentice, who joined us following a work experience placement. Often businesses feel they can’t spare the time or money
to facilitate an apprentice but in our experience the benefits they’ll reap far outweigh any short term strain on resources. One of the reasons our apprenticeships work so well is that we ensure they are given the time and support to complete all their apprenticeship work within office hours, as well as giving them full access to the MVIS/Bartco team of qualified staff, which they really appreciate and which motivates and enables them to achieve the best results they can. At MVIS and Bartco UK, apprenticeships are fundamental
to our ability to plug those gaps in our skillset that aren’t being met fast enough by our sector. I expect them to make up a significant proportion of our workforce in the years to come.
• Training is funded: Depending on the size of your business, the Government will pay for some or most of your apprenticeship training. Funding for apprenticeships was reformed in 2017 with the introduction of a levy for businesses with a total salary bill of more than £3m per annum.
• Acquire the skills your business needs: You decide which areas you need developing and identify apprentices and training providers to deliver them.
• Fulfil important corporate social responsibilities: Help local people find rewarding work and feed money back into local economies.
• Improve safety: Apprenticeship training, especially in technical or hazardous sectors, will contribute to safer working practices.
• Embed your company ethos from day one: MVIS apprentices learn our core TRUST values from day one, which means they can be easily moulded into team and ultimately management roles.
