Matlock-based sister companies, Mobile Visual Information Systems (MVIS) and Bartco UK, leading suppliers of intelligent transport system (ITS) products and solutions to the traffic management sector, are leading advocates of apprenticeships, having yielded considerable business benefits from their own long- standing scheme. In this feature, General Manager Anne Ashman discusses


the considerable advantages the companies have accrued as a result of this Government-funded initiative, and corrects a few common misconceptions that still prevail.


COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS Apprenticeships are focused on manual trades Not true. Businesses in any sector from legal firms to schools can get involved in apprenticeship training. It is increasingly popular with businesses looking to develop soft skills including sales. At MVIS we’ve used the apprenticeship scheme to


develop our team’s technical, managerial and soft skills sets.


Apprenticeships are for school-leavers Partly true. They are designed for anyone from school leaving age looking to combine work with study to gain


skills and knowledge in a specific job. They are increasingly popular with an older demographic, with one report stating that people aged 25 or older accounted for 46% of all apprenticeship starts in 2016/17.


Apprenticeships are male dominated Not true. It’s a somewhat even split and in 2016/17, 54% of apprenticeship starts were by women. Rebecca Saint in purchasing and stock control joined


MVIS as an apprentice in March 2015 and Tillie Wooliscroft joined as an admin apprentice in June 2017.


Apprenticeships are designed to attract new talent Partly true. They can also be set up to strengthen the skills of your existing workforce.
