Blythe House Hospice nurses Hospice meets the challenge

Blythe House Hospice has worked with its local community to deliver impressive results at what is a challenging time for the care industry. Situated in the High Peak, on the

edge of North Derbyshire - and inevitably on the edge of health care boundaries - the merging of county boundaries can result in geographical challenges which affect care delivery, as well as worries about the financial sustainability of the NHS. Balancing ambition and austerity

will always be a challenge, so having clear strategic goals and a shared vision throughout its workforce has helped Blythe House

‘To stay relevant, solvent and keep to our mission we must stay together, work in partnership with others and embrace social change’

remain anchored in why it is here - to provide support and palliative care in the community of the High Peak and Derbyshire Dales for people with cancer and other life- threatening illnesses and to offer support to their families, carers and those who have been bereaved. Janet Dunphy, CEO at Blythe

House Hospice, said: “The question for Blythe House has been how we can fit into the changes and increase and improve the care to the community of the High Peak.

Holiday Inn refurb is fit for the fire service

Holiday Inn Leicester has joined forces with Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service for a training exercise to mark the beginning of its multi-million-pound ‘Fit for a King’ project. Holiday Inn Leicester closed off

its eighth floor to guests recently and opened it up to the Leicestershire fire service to conduct a full high-rise training exercise. This was set up to help the service practice in dealing with fires within a high-rise building, with the firefighters, along with some of the hotel team, creating realistic scenarios. The coordinated event saw four fire engines participating in the

exercise from different stations across Leicester. Matt Walters, Watch Manager at

Central Fire Station, on Lancaster Road, said: “It was a great opportunity to practice these drills within a high-rise building in the city centre and the day was invaluable for the team. “Working in partnership with the

hotel was a great opportunity also to see how they deal with evacuating and assessing there own procedures, and hopefully more training sessions will be organised in the future.” The exercise sees the beginning

of the hotel’s multi-million-pound refurbishment. The Holiday Inn

Leicester, on St Nicholas Circle, is the oldest Holiday Inn in the UK, opening its doors in 1971. Its ‘Fit for a King’ project, which ends in March, will see all 194 bedrooms refurbished, as well as the Leicestershire suite, restaurant, bar, lobby, reception and an entire floor of meeting rooms.

“We are part of a community

that is prepared to help. There is a strong culture of self-reliance in the High Peak and Blythe House has used a legacy to develop a ‘Hospice at Home’ service to support people to die at home if that is their wish. In just 18 months, 15,000 hours of care have been delivered and 150 people have been able to die at home with their loved ones. Our donors are our beneficiaries. The nurturing element of what Blythe House does

is a direct reflection of the community that supports us. “Together with district nurses,

GPs and other services we have been able to wrap around those who need us. Our services can start pre-diagnosis for some, through illness for others as they go back to a life without illness and for some into bereavement. We have nurses, counsellors and therapists alongside anyone who visits us. “We know that to stay relevant,

solvent and keep to our mission we must stay together, work in partnership with others and embrace social change. We are stronger together and very proud to be part of the High Peak community.”
