East Midlands Trains customers raise over £2,000

East Midlands Trains customers have raised over £2,000 for children on the streets of the UK, India and East Africa by donating their Delay Repay compensation. At the start of 2017, East Midlands Trains announced an innovative scheme which allowed customers claiming compensation for a delayed journey to donate it to charity. The scheme, Delay Repay,

allows customers to claim money back if their journey is delayed by 30 minutes or more. It also allows customers to tick a box and their compensation is paid, in full, to the chosen charity. Jake Kelly, Managing

Director, East Midlands Trains, said: “We’re delighted our customers have helped to raise over £2,000 for Railway Children this year. “We hope this scheme will

continue to provide support for the many good causes in the country and we would like to thank our customers for their generosity.”

Learning through growth

An East Midlands primary school is getting its very own fruit orchard, thanks to a local business. Pupils at Crabtree Farm Primary

in Bulwell, Nottingham, are planting apple, pear, plum and other fruit trees. The children hope to juice the

apples in the summer and one of the trees, the sumac, produces seeds of a popular Middle Eastern spice which makes lemonade. The £2,250 venture at Crabtree

Farm Primary School will see 20 trees planted, together with a colourful forage trail of berry bushes and other edible plants. The plants will be sourced from

local suppliers and preference will be given to those from community gardens rather than profit-making businesses. The school also has a climate-

controlled greenhouse which allows the children to learn about sustainability, renewable energy, healthy eating and growing and maintaining food crops. The orchard is being funded by a

donation from award-winning PR company Arch Communications, based in East Leake. The company operates on social enterprise principles, generating funds to

Crabtree Farm Primary students with Arch Founder Matt Youdale Dylan and teacher Kirstie Walton

invest for community benefit. Arch has already contributed more than £100,000 to local causes. Arch Founder Matt Youdale said:

“Foodshare is brilliant on so many levels. “ As soon as I heard about it, I

wanted to help. We hope this project can benefit the school and local community for generations to come.”

The school’s Environmental

Education Lead, Kirstie Walton, said: “We are thrilled to be receiving the funding from Arch Communications. “The aim is to create an edible

journey for the children, opening their eyes to the world of food. “Our children will benefit from

being able to pick the fruit themselves and further their learning about sustainability.”
