Science Ambassadors at Corfe Hills School

A group of our Sixth Form students at Corfe Hills have become Science Ambassadors, encouraging the Year 9 Science Club students to take part in various initiatives.

During the Autumn term, students stretched their brains and developed their skills in a series of hands- on science experiments designed by the James Dyson Foundation. Particular favourites included creating an underwater volcano to show how convection currents work and learning about surface tension whilst trying to pierce a balloon without popping it!

Computer Problems?

Students also engaged online with scientists, Skyping Helen O’Neill, a PhD student at the Zoological Society of London (ZSL). Students discovered how Helen is using technology in her research to record movement data of endangered cheetahs and African wild dogs in Northern Kenya, and questioned her about her route to becoming a scientist.

The online interaction continued in the UK-wide ‘I’m a Scientist, Get me out of here’, where students became the judge in this X-factor style competition with the opportunity to Ask-Chat-Vote for their favourite scientist to survive eviction.

As confi dence grew, Corfe Hills students challenged the scientists during a 30 minute live chat with questions such as “Why do we have head lice?” and “How can we stop global warming?”

Enthusiasm increased with excitement: “Miss, miss, look he’s answered my question!” and with it came more inspired questions for the scientists to answer.

It was all over too quickly, but Corfe Hills School will be sure to take part in this exciting event again.

In the Spring term the students will be getting involved in a project which will provide the opportunity to expand their scientifi c understanding beyond the specifi cation and to develop useful scientifi c skills. In recognition for their hard work and effort, students will earn a British Science Association Crest Award.
