Church News
Well I wonder how many of us who have made New Year’s resolutions have stuck to them even after the fi rst few weeks of January?
It seems to me to be a tough time of year to give ourselves big challenges. The days are cold, short and dark and we don’t even have Christmas to look forward to now, and Spring still seems some way off. No wonder many of us soon forget our resolutions; it can feel enough of a challenge to survive the winter.
Perhaps we would do better to be kind to ourselves at this time of year, working out what we most need, not only to survive but to thrive during these winter months before we enjoy the sense of hope that Spring brings. Perhaps we should just set ourselves more manageable daily goals rather than an overwhelming resolution for the whole year. I heard an interesting item on the radio today where a psychologist was talking about behaviour being contagious and how human beings tend to copy the behaviour of others. His challenge was that if we ourselves take small positive actions, for example opening doors for others, then others are likely to follow suit. He wanted to see people empowered to have an infl uence for good on those around them and his point was that this is possible by each of us just taking small positive steps and then others copying these.
I am always encouraged that Jesus’s ministry was very short. It only lasted three years and at the time nobody could have imagined the impact that his life and actions would have made. But around the world many today continue to be inspired by him and follow his example. So small steps forward are defi nitely the way I am planning to head this year.
Talking about small steps, we are hoping to hear more children’s steps as we reintroduce some all age family services at St Nicholas this year. These monthly family services will have something for every age in, but with a focus on being relaxed and suitable for younger children and will be under an hour in length. Our next All Age Family Service is Sunday 21st January 2018 at 10am (refreshments 9.30am).
My warmest wishes for the New Year.
