FEDERATION On The Road with Your Families Federation – We’re Here To Listen By Graeme Spark, Policy and Plans Manager

As afamous person once said “The human brain starts working the moment you are born and never stops until you stand up to speak in public.” –And how much this year Ican empathise with that sentiment!

Since the Federation’s inception, ‘face to face engagement’ with our personnel and families has always been at the core of our work. We have been working particularly hard this year to ensure that we have seen as many of you as possible (Regular,Reserve and families). From Lossiemouth to London; St Athan to St Mawgan our small but enthusiastic team has been on the road to gather that much needed and important evidence and anecdotal opinion from you our customer.Hopefully, you have seen members of our team at your Station Families Days –onhand to give advice and support to you –together with our Covenant Managers, who are also there at aregional level to offer information

and guidance with issues surrounding the Armed Forces Covenant.

In order to deliver our message first hand we currently facilitateamultitude of presentations to audiences ranging from Senior Officers about to take up Command Appointments, Local Authorities, Community Support and Welfare specialists to young men and women (and their families) just beginning their own RAF careers during Phase 1training.

We are particularly indebted to our friends at Airmen’s Command Squadron for allowing us the opportunity to speak with and hear the views of every NCO undertaking their promotion courses. As we stress to each one –weare your Federation ready to support you and your families as and when required. In return we only ask that you remember on occasions that ‘silence can be seen as satisfaction’and therefore we stress the importance of the completion of our

surveys in order for us to accurately reflect your opinion and view as required by Ministers, MOD and RAF Senior Leaders.

Recently, wehave also been running workshops with newly promoted Warrant Officers. As aformer Chief of the Air Staff’s Warrant Officer, this has reminded me that ‘You can always tell aWarrant Officer ….. But you can’t tell them much !!’. More seriously,as expected the sessions have proved to be very successful in both capturing their views and balancing in both capturing their views and balancing them against our wider survey results (raf-ff.org.uk/reports.asp). Our workshops are fully interactive with participants’ leading debate and results available instantaneously.

If you would like us to assist you in the future with events, briefings or information then please do get in touch with our team. 
