Blooming Good Fruits Advice for gardeners from Chestnut Nursery

As the sun swings low across the southern sky, the evenings draw near and winters frosty grip tightens.

Tender Apple Blossom

plants have been stored away under glass, the fl eece is ready to cast and the kettle is always on. Many plants have adapted to the cold and rely on the wintery climate to undergo the almost mystical process of vernalisation. This is the term given to a set of changes, induced by winter conditions, which ultimately lead to the formation of the coming season’s fl owers. Fruit trees such as apples and cherries benefi t greatly from vernalisation, which promotes a greater abundance of fl owers and sweeter fruit.

Here at the nursery our volunteers have been enjoying potting up a wide selection of fruit trees and fl owering cherries. To achieve successful pollination, it is necessary to have two different apple tree varieties. This year we are labelling our plants with a handy numbering system to make it easier for customers to choose varieties that best pollinate each other. If you don’t have space for more than one tree you could consider a family apple tree or a variety called Cox’s Orange Pippin as these are self-fertile.

Proving very popular last year, we are again growing Cherry Kordia, with a dwarf habit and delicious fruit it is ideal for the patio container or small garden. The blooms on fl owering cherries are just wonderful so we are extending our range. Flowering early in the year they sell out fast, so be sure to pay us a visit soon.
