Lytchett Minster School “Tape, tape!” one of

the students cried as her team’s carefully constructed cardboard shelter began to collapse in the face of the cold November wind passing through the grounds of Lytchett Minster School.

It was Friday 3rd

November and the shelter was one of many scattered across the grounds,

each built by an industrious team of sixth formers choosing to sleep outside to raise awareness of homelessness and funds for YMCA Bournemouth, a charity specialising in helping homeless people return to independent living (www.ymcabournemouth.org.uk).

The 16 to 18 year olds sought sponsorship for their YMCA Bournemouth ‘Sleep Easy’ challenge before giving up their Friday night to don winter coats, build shelters and keep themselves warm through quizzing, group exercises and pizza.

Prizes were awarded for the best shelter (pictured), with the winning teams – led by Millie Murray-Brown

and Katie Harrison – awarded Domino’s

vouchers. There were also driving lessons courtesy of New Driver awarded to the leading fundraiser, Rhiannon Weaver, who raised over £250!

“We see a lot of

homelessness locally,” said participants Sophie Read, Georgia Spring and Lizzy Woods. “It makes

you feel bad for them and lucky that it isn’t you.”

The students were eventually driven inside by torrential rain, but all thought the event worthwhile. Headmaster Andrew Mead said: “They got an understanding of how brutal it must be to sleep rough and be exposed to the elements. What they would not have gleaned is just how lonely, scary and alienating it must be for people who have nowhere to call home.”
