Keep Upton Tidy

(Volunteers working in partnership with Dorset Wildlife Trust and Purbeck District Council)

Chairman, Len Roff: 01202 622887 Vice Chairman: Fred Drane 01202 385114 Treasurer, Andrew Starr: 01202 631161 Secretary, Sandra Williams: 01202 624561

At our November meeting we were joined by Su Powner of the Dorset Dogs Trust. Su explained the role of the Trust in promoting responsible dog ownership in the area, particularly in respect of avoiding dog fouling. We agreed we would seek to work with her on issues affecting the Upton area and where possible liaise with the Trust at local events.

The group also discussed future activities and refl ected on the reduced numbers on the committee – and how no new blood was coming in to support this very important community group. Len Roff and Fred Drane established Keep Upton Tidy nearly ten years ago as the state of the area was very poor and needed a major local initiative. Since then things have improved, but there is still much more to be done. Nationally the cost of clearing litter is put at some £800m and increasingly such costs are being passed down by government to local levels. So it is you and I who will pay the bill, hence our efforts to engage with the community over the years.

We hope that there are younger people out there in Upton willing to keep ‘the Beacon’ burning, for the Group to continue to be a focus for maintaining and improving our environment. If there is, then great and let’s hear from you. If not, we are not sure how long we can keep our group going given the steady progress of age and infi rmity. The commitment is typically no more than four meetings a year and three litter picks.

The next meeting of the Keep Upton Tidy Group will be at 6pm on Wednesday 7th February at the Council Offi ces at Moorland Way. This will also be our AGM where we are hopeful there will be new faces coming forward – you would be most welcome. Please contact one of the offi cers above to make sure we are aware you are coming and to ensure access to the meeting room. Meanwhile we offer our continuing thanks to all those who have supported us on litter picks, including the wonderful Upton Guides and other volunteers.

Finally we would ask residents to be vigilant and advise in the fi rst place Dorset Waste Partnership (either online or on 01305 221040) of any litter, fl y- tipping, dog fouling or overgrown pathways (or bins that have not been emptied). If you cannot resolve the problem, contact the Town Council (01202 632070) or one of the offi cers above.

LET’S MAKE OUR TOWN SPECIAL in 2018 and have a wonderful Christmas and New Year.
