other nation refers to a national obser- vance as “Turkey Day”) almost all carry with them two distinct images of this special occasion. Everything goes wrong: old feuds simmer, unresolved sor- rows emerge, honest expressions of love are rejected and—yes—the turkey and gravy get dumped on someone’s head. As much as we long for the flawless,
bucolic Thanksgiving—especially if we are hosting the meal—we live in fear that this year’s might be an awful, imploding Thanksgiving. Our tendency is to believe we have little control over which of the two Thanksgivings we’re going to experi- ence this year. Good news!
