CATERING

For your school kitchen to run smoothly, ingredients need to arrive on time and appliances need to be fully functional. Food Business Manager Darren Byford explains how YPO’s food and catering deals provide a cost-effective solution

Q

We currently negotiate our contracts with catering

suppliers – would we benefit from utilisting an existing framework? Absolutely! As the largest public sector buying organisation, YPO can leverage its buying power to deliver the best possible value for its customers. Our public sector frameworks have been created – and are managed – by experts in food procurement, and our remit is to save you money, time and, above all, effort. All suppliers on the framework

have completed stringent tests to ensure they will deliver the best quality products and service. All the procurement work has been completed for you, ensuring that suppliers are 100% EU compliant. Many schools that are currently

negotiating their own contracts could end up having the same

products delivered by the same supplier, but for a better price. So if a school currently buys a 16kg bag of our for £4.70 they could get a British wheat our through the YPO UK Food Deal for £4.30.*

Q

We like to source food locally – presumably the YPO deals

only enable us to work with big national food suppliers? No – over 60% of the 40+ suppliers on the frameworks are SMEs, and YPO is pleased to be working with both national and regional suppliers. Local suppliers of fruit, vegetables

and meat are available through YPO. But if the items are in a can, tin or packet, a much better pricing offer will be available via a national distributor. The example I always quote is baked beans, which are usually manufactured in Italy and imported into the UK.

Q

Can we buy everything we need in one place?

2016 saw the launch of our brand-new food framework – the UK Food Deal, which provides customers with a exible way to buy all the food they need. The beauty of the UK Food Deal is that it brings all our food categories together in one place – groceries, frozen foods, community meals (ready-made chilled and frozen meals), pasta, hot wraps and rice- based dishes, fruit and vegetables, chilled food, fresh and cooked meat, fresh bread, pastries and cakes, sandwiches and wraps. Using the Deal is simple – you

choose the supplier to use, agree the product range and pricing with YPO – then carry on providing a rst-class catering service in your school using the YPO UK Food Deal, saving you time, effort and money.

Q

Can YPO help with kitchen management processes of

stocktaking, ordering, etc? Yes! YPO and the majority of suppliers on the YPO UK Food Deal have the ability to integrate with many of the catering IT systems used in schools. Many of our customers use CYPAD and Saffron ordering and stock-management systems. If customers prefer to use their own IT systems or paper-
