CASE STUDY: ‘OUR NEW LIBRARY SECURITY SYSTEM MEANS NO MORE MISSING BOOKS!’
‘I had been concerned about not having any control over the comings and goings of library stock for some time. But I didn’t know quite how many books were going missing, although I would estimate that is was at least 50 books – worth around £500 – a year. I discussed this informally with the
Vice Principal, who agreed that we should invest in a security system. He asked me to submit a proposal, so I researched systems (seeing three providers), and organised the technical aspects with our IT department and IS Oxford (which provides our library management system). This included purchasing and
installing a SIP2 system, which enabled the security gates to communicate the title of the book to my computer screen rather than just informing me that the alarm had been set off – an excellent investment! The system was installed
during the rst week of the summer holidays. I worked an extra ve days while D-Tech carried out the installation, using the time to tag stock. The security gates have provided a
very good return on investment for us. The expense of losing 50 books a year more than covers the cost of our service agreement and within a couple of years the one-off equipment cost will have been recovered. Funds that would have been spent on replacement books can now be used to purchase new stock. The pupils quickly learnt how to
check books out, and it’s now very rare for the alarms to be activated. While there is currently no technical mechanism to recoup money for books that students fail to return, Year 11 students aren’t able to collect their prom ticket until all library books are accounted for! The nance team generate invoices for lost or damaged
stock, some of which are paid (although there is no guarantee). I have been really impressed with
D-Tech on many levels. Firstly, they were competitive on price; the ongoing costs of RFID tags were cheaper than their competitors; and they also provided a two-year warranty. D-Tech’s customer service has been exemplary, too, and I would recommend them to any school seeking a reliable security solution that offers a rapid return on investment.’ Asa Nylinder, Librarian, Rivers Academy, Feltham, Middlesex
(988 pupils) D-Tech provides high-performance technology products throughout the UK. Prices for library security systems vary, however a standard security gate/ staff pad scenario (often adequate for a school library) would cost around £4,000-£5,000. For more information, visit
