As the leaves tumble and mix with all the many varieties of litter we seem to generate, it is still important to collect and recycle or dispose of in the bins those things that are NOT nature’s bounty but artifi cial decoration of our streets that we could do without. I am sure I am preaching to the converted, but I have no doubt we can infl uence others who currently cannot at present be bothered and that we can continue to lead by example. Maybe one day we will walk through an unlittered Upton and think all the nagging was worthwhile!
Meanwhile as we are advised by our councillor member Fred Drane, we are not alone in tackling litter with national (Keep Britain Tidy) and county initiatives (Litter Free Dorset – www.
litterfreecoastandsea.co.uk) very active.
There have been problems caused by bins left on pavements, so pushchairs and disability scooters have not been able to get by. Whilst it is appreciated that some people are out all day after collections, it would be great if we are all able to remove these bins from pavements and into our premises as soon as we can to allow everyone to use the pathways safely.
With autumn in the air, our next Community Litter Pick will be at 10am on Sunday 8th October, meeting at the Surgery and Library Car Park in Upton. As usual this is limited to two hours and all equipment is provided. It would be wonderful to see some new people – you will be very welcome.
The next meeting of the Keep Upton Tidy Group will be at 6pm on Wednesday 1st November at the Council Offi ces at Morland Way. If anyone would like to attend they would be most welcome. Please contact one of the offi cers above to make sure we are aware you are coming and to ensure access to the meeting room. Meanwhile, thanks to all those who have been looking after their areas or making sure litter gets to a bin.
Finally we would ask residents to be vigilant and advise the above named offi cers of any litter, fl y- tipping, dog fouling or overgrown pathways (or bins that have not been emptied) and we will do our best to resolve the problem.
