blEphaclEan WIpES I recently received phone calls from a few contractors enquiring if blephaclean Wipes were allowed or Disallowed. the query originated because these contractors had the forms for blephaclean Wipes that they had received during may and had included them with their may prescriptions to be paid at the end of June. however, these scripts were returned 'Disallowed' even though they were listed in the bSo may codebook.

blephaclean Wipes were classified as a preparation up until 20 april 2017 when the classification changed to a Device. cE marked devices must be listed in the Drug tariff to be allowed and paid on a prescription form. Whilst a code for blephaclean

new concessionary prices for pregabalin have been added during the month, so please check the up to date information.

Wipes was listed in the may codebook, the item did not appear in the may Drug tariff.

as a general rule, you would not expect a Disallowed item to have a code, so I contacted bSo and received the following confirmation: ‘this item was not allowed in may or June. the code book did list a code for this item and this is due to the way it is produced from the masterfile using the most current file available. With this item coming onto the Drug tariff and master file in July it will reappear in the code book for august with its old code. bSo’s advice regarding allowed/disallowed items (as stated in road shows and training events) is that the primary source for determining if any item is allowed is the current northern Ireland Drug tariff.’

therefore, due to this administrative technicality, forms for blephaclean Wipes dispensed during the months of may or June will not be paid, but payment will resume for forms dispensed from July onwards using the original code.

catEgorY m I am sure you are already aware of the reduction of category m items in the Drug tariff. the reduced pricing will take effect from august (July scripts).

price reductions can be seen doing a comparison of the category m items on the Drug tariffs for the months affected.

a complete comparison sheet showing price reductions will be forwarded to all Uca members each month. I have taken a small portion
