The Future of RHS Garden Wisley
Exciting transformations are underway at the world-class garden
F
or more than 200 years the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has been the force behind the nation’s love of gardening, backed up by its core vision to ‘enrich everyone’s life through plants, and make the UK a greener and more beautiful place’. A shining example of this is the charity’s flagship garden, RHS Garden Wisley in Surrey, which is one of the UK’s most visited and best-loved gardens.
As both a hub of horticultural excellence and a top visitor attraction, the popularity of the garden has grown substantially over the past decade, with visits increasing from 750,000 to over one million per year.
Growing Wisley for everyone
Recognising the increase in popularity, the RHS has made a commitment to secure RHS Garden Wisley’s position as a world-class garden for generations to come. As part of the RHS’s £160 million investment programme across the society, it has commenced an exciting project at Wisley that will enhance the

garden, improve the visitor experience, and invest in the future of gardening. The five year programme of transformational works is all about creating a garden for the future. And while the exciting programme of works is carried out, RHS Garden Wisley is keeping its doors open for everyone to continue to enjoy the garden.
New Welcome Building
Plans for RHS Garden Wisley include a new arrival walk, grove and welcome hub designed by world-class landscape architect Christopher Bradley-Hole. A stylish entrance will be a meeting place for visitors and house a new shop, café and plant centre leading into the garden with a ‘village square’ and restaurant.
The Laboratory Reborn By following the new entry path, visitors will be greeted by a fresh vista of the iconic Arts and Crafts-style science Laboratory building and the gently- steeped lawns that will be in keeping with the building’s elegance and academic heritage. Additionally, following the
enhancements to the interior of the Laboratory, it will be open to the public for the first time in over 100 years. Visitors will be able to step back in time and explore where and how scientists pioneered horticultural research, and where generations of students have learned their profession.
New Centre for Science & Learning Horticultural
The Centre for Horticultural Science and Learning will be the UK’s first dedicated centre of excellence in horticultural science, taxonomy and plant health. Combined with an educational visitor hub, it will provide facilities to inspire and nurture scientists and horticulturists of the future, and increase support for home and professional gardeners. It will also include a new advisory hub that will improve how we share ‘best practice’ for the UK’s 27 million gardeners so they are prepared for gardening in a changing climate. The Centre will be surrounded by three new educational gardens, illustrating how plants impact on daily lives.
