ISC Census Reveals Private School Pupils Get Excellent Results
Social mobility T
he latest figures show that 91% of all ISC pupils went on to university, with 55% going on to a Russell Group university. The number of parents who see the benefits of private schools is rising dramatically, particularly as the Conservative government is increasing cuts to state education. It will soon become essential if you want your child to have a good education and more Surrey parents in particular are considering switching their children to private education.
June 2017
The 2017 Independent Schools Council (ISC) Census demonstrates another successful year for independent schools across the UK. The detailed annual Census is completed by all ISC schools and is therefore a comprehensive and dispassionate reflection of trends within the sector.
Pupil Numbers
The continued success of independent schools is seen, in particular, in the South-East region which demonstrates steady growth year on year. This year’s Census shows that in London and the South East there are 448 schools, educating over 170,000 children.

ISC schools are committed to helping out families from all walks of life through fee assistance. A third of our pupils receive help with their fees, which amounts to £900 million annually. A significant majority of fee assistance is provided directly from the schools themselves and more than 5,500 pupils at ISC schools pay no fees at all.
University entry The vast majority of school leavers educated at ISC schools continue to higher education. The most recent figures reveal that 91% of all ISC pupils went on to university, with 55% going on to a Russell Group university. 2015 research from the Higher Education Funding Council for England showed that 82% of independent pupils go on to achieve a 1st or 2:1 at university, compared with 73% nationally.
Soft Skills
Independent schools recognise that academic results are not the only element of a good education and teaching soft skills is important. Research carried out in association with AQR International analysed the value added by independent schools to “soft skills”. The research showed that pupils at ISC independent schools have good attainment, wellbeing and
behaviour and are more resilient, better at dealing with setbacks and more open to learning as a result. Our pupils learn to be self-disciplined, self- reliant, ambitious, curious, culturally sophisticated and self-confident.
Partnerships with state
schools are blossoming Independent schools play an important role in their communities. This year has seen more progress in this area with 1,140 schools in partnership with state schools. The number of projects recorded on the Schools Together website reached over 1,700 and, it’s estimated that the partnership work taking place is benefiting approximately 175,000 state school pupils. Partnership work ranges from academy sponsorship to seconding teaching staff, serving as governors at state schools and sharing facilities to partnering for activities and projects. Schools are finding ways to share resources and broaden the horizons of pupils in all participating schools.
