MAKING LOCAL ROADS SAFER – CALL FOR SPEEDWATCH VOLUNTEERS

With one of the local Speedwatch team moving away, we are keen to hear from potential new volunteers.

Working with the police, Upton and Lytchett Minster Speedwatch team monitors the speeds of drivers on local roads where residents have complained of excessive speed. You may have seen teams of three with bright yellow jackets working on Dorchester Road, Blandford Road, Poole Road or Sandy Lane.

The aim of Speedwatch is not to penalise drivers who go slightly over the speed limits, but to encourage all to stay within the limits thus avoiding fi nes. Our presence does remind drivers to keep a check on their speed and we usually fi nd about 95% of drivers are within or close to the 30mph limits. But those who drive faster, especially the drivers we clock exceeding 45mph, make life more dangerous, noisier and less pleasant for others driving, cycling, walking or living on these roads.

And in urban areas, especially when approaching the centre of Upton, speeding does not save the driver time as their journey time is determined by how easily they can get through traffi c lights or roundabouts.

We work closely with the police and our counts of the numbers of drivers speeding on particular roads at different times helps them to target their efforts to make the biggest difference.

If you are interested in joining the team, please email the Speedwatch co-ordinator, Stephen Link, on stephen.link99@hotmail.co.uk.

NEXT PACT MEETING

Road safety is one of the issues Upton and Lytchett Minster residents raise and discuss with town councillors and the police at the meetings of Partners and Communities Together (PACT), held six times a year. Other topics include vandalism, theft/burglaries, anti-social behaviour and online/telephone/doorstep fraud.

Our next meeting is at 7pm on Wednesday 13th September at the Church Lounge, Upton Community Centre, Poole Road – near the roundabout. All local residents are welcome.
