Nia is growing in Dunblane...
Susan, Class teacher for Nia in Dunblane says its not too late to join our Nia community…
Have you tried other fi tness classes and disliked the aggressive atmosphere? Nia is inclusive and welcoming and focuses on the true meaning of fi tness – its not about weight lifting or fashion statements or complex moves – its about feeling better and moving better. Cardio health, fl exibility all come into it but so does gaining better balance and coordination.
I am bowled over by the reception to Nia in Dunblane; Nia
is not just a fi tness class but a worldwide
movement encouraging community and advocating access to fi tness and wellness for all ages, shapes, sizes and abilities. This July the Dunblane classes had trip to visit our Nia Scotland founding community in Fife and danced with Nia-people from USA, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Scotland, England, Ireland… We had a wonderful time!
Worldwide for 35 years (but not highly promoted), for me, Nia, is the class I always wanted (I stumbled upon it at aged 53) and it’s my great privilege (and constant surprise!) that I now teach it. It’s great if you are uncoordinated, has glorious music and is absorbing and friendly and really enjoyable. Also, Nia is more than just a fi tness class, it has a health and wellness practice behind it - The Nia Technique.
In
my classes I have all ages from 20 to 80+, and will support diff erent levels so that we may enjoy the vibrancy of all ages and abilities moving together, at their own level in ‘their body’s way’. Its ideal if you have a few aches and pains and want to get moving; get more agile and more supple and work on your coordination, but it also works if you want to lose weight and get your heart rate up.
In my classes I have all ages from 20s to 80s. Nia is defi nitely not ‘just’ for over 50s, many younger people appreciate it as sustainable, pleasurable, eff ective fi tness, but I do want to encourage you to try Nia is you have never exercised or if you think you are ‘too old’ or young but feel out of place in all those high intensity classes around.
Typically we like to do Nia barefoot so we develop better balance and coordination, but soft shoes, socks or trainers are fi ne too.
In Nia we move by shifting
(not dropping) the weight; incorporating knowledge and ethos from various martial arts and practices,
but this does not mean its all ‘wishy washy’ moves – far from it – but it is easy to do and feels great! And the music -- ah the music -- it is from haunting fl ute, through to jazz, tribal beats through to soulful vocals and is from all over the world. Most of all we move for pleasure in way that is kind to our body!
