Like many families, we enjoy watching a good fi lm. One day I realised though that we had literally boxes and boxes of DVDs which were taking up so much space in the living room they literally needed their own storage unit.

I didn’t really feel in a position to throw them out because I knew that Sunday afternoons were good candidates to go through the collection and pick a special fi lm that we’d not watched for a while. And then there’s the ones that you have emotional

attachment to, where you have fond memories of your little ones watching the screen transfi xed and then playing it over and over again when it fi nished.

So then I had a brainwave. Instead of throwing the DVDs away, I’d simply get rid of the boxes. Now you might be thinking I’ve gone a bit mad at this point because of course the discs would get scratched and how on earth do you work out which one is which?

Many good stationery shops, and indeed shopping online, will sell you pockets that you can store DVDs in. They slot nicely into a large folder (I believe Argos do these too). By putting them in alphabetically you can quickly fi nd the one you need. Again, you’re probably wondering how you choose a fi lm when you don’t have something to browse. (It’s not easy to do this by turning sheets of DVD pockets). We bought an A5 clip folder, and took out the paper sleeves from the DVD boxes. You can then punch them and pop them in (again in alphabetical order if you choose) and fl ick through them, like your very own ‘fi lm catalogue’. We managed to condense three large Ikea storage boxes down to two folders which go nicely away in the living room just by getting rid of the plastic boxes. Genius
