Church opening doors for ‘hard hat tours’ of repairs

CHILDREN from the three primary schools in Snodland have had “hard hat” visits to see repair work at All Saints’ Church. Pupils from the Church of Eng-

land, St Katherine's and Invicta, Holborough schools were taken round the grade I listed building by architects Paul Sharrock and Bar- bara Stringer, site manager Emma Carr and stonemason SamWalker. The Rev Mandy Young said the

pupils were able to investigate some of the architectural features, ask questions and explore some of the tools being used. They were even asked to guess

the number of tubes used in the scaffolding surrounding the church. Dr Jonathan Rodgers, head of In-

victa, said the pupils were amazed to have such a wonderful building in themiddle of their community. An open day is being held at the church on August 19, to give every- one the opportunity to see how the project is developing. Tours will start at 1.30pm, therewill be a pres- entation by Paul Sharrock at 2.30pm, and cream teas andmore

tours at 3.30pm. The day will end at 5pm. The Rev Hugh Broadbent said: "Places on the tours are limited and will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis. "Participantswill need to be aged

12 or over, wearing appropriate footwear and clothing and able to climb scaffolding ladders and ne- gotiate the openings at each floor level."

He said the stonework above the

arch had proved to be in a worse condition than originally thought and more stone would be required asaresult. "However, it is still anticipated

that the high-level urgent repair workwill be completed on time and within budget," he added. "The official finish date is Decem-

ber 1, although we hope it may be completed sooner than that."

A TESCO sign on the A228 at the HamHill roundabout indicating that the distribution centre is in Hays Road will hopefully stop HGVs being driven round narrow roads in Snodland and Birling. KCC Clllr Sarah Hohler had arranged “Unsuitable for HGV” signs, suppliers had been advised of the postcode and meetings have been organised with Tesco, but to no avail. Cllr Hohler told Town Talk: "I have

been asking Tesco to put up a sign to help their suppliers find them rather than getting lost In Snod- land, so I hope it works." Sue Bell, a councillor on Ton-

bridge & Malling Council and Snodland Town Council, said resi- dents living in Birling had been plagued by HGVs whose drivers had missed the sign for the distri- bution centre. Stray lorries will continue to be monitored.
