Snodland & District Choral Society has closed after its final performance, Messiah, at Christ Church, Malling Road. In an emotional evening, a presentation and flowers were presented to An- drew and Brenda Ashbee, who have run the society since 1981.Membership was falling and, as Andrew said: "We aremostly elderly and our repertoire does not appeal to younger people." Ellen Smith, soprano, and Andrew Millest, trumpet, were the soloists and a collection which was taken in aid of the Coram Foundation.

Centre needs volunteers

SNODLAND Community Centre has marked its 30th anniversary with a celebration in the Pad- dlesworth Rooms. While residents enjoyed after-

noon tea and the entertainment of Martin Rolfe, many remembered when the community centre opened on July 4, 1987. Linda Howick, the president of Snodland Community Association and the founder of the project, thanked those who had helped the community centre develop. She said: "It is often forgotten that this building is not run by the coun-

cil but depends largely upon the volunteers who work hard to keep it going. It was begun as a result of public demand and is run by the people for the people." However, she said there was now

a need for fresh blood. “We need to encourage enthusi-

astic people to get involved by be- coming members and offering their services as volunteers. They will al- ways bemade most welcome."
