£100k bus cash brings dilemma
MALLING bus users have been presented with a “use it or lose it” dilemma over a £100,000 windfall. The cash offer from developer Redrow Homes would increase the frequency of bus services to villages, including Ryarsh and Addington, but would mean buses terminating in West Malling. A second option suggests leaving the direct service into Maidstone Hospital and town. The money - known as section 106
cash -was made available as part of the planning approval for Ryarsh Brickworks, with the proviso that it be used to improve bus services to Ryarsh.
However, the county council says
the number 58 Arriva service is heavily subsidised and introducing a more frequent Monday-Friday “Ryarsh Flyer” would mean passen- gers changing or taking the train to get into Maidstone or to the hospital. KCC adds: “The intention is that
any service would become commer- cially viable once the money has been exhausted because our budget for socially necessary bus services is fully utilised. “If it is not possible to agree a suit-
able use for the section 106 money, the planning process dictates that the full amount will have to be re-
turned to Redrow Homes.” The public is now being asked
what route should be taken. Ryarsh Parish Council chairman David Storey said: “It is the universal prob- lem of rural buses requiring bums on seats to make them viable. It seems that a guaranteed service for 12 months, with links into Maid- stone via the bus stops and train sta- tion in West Malling may be the better option. “The current Ryarsh service is in- frequent, but, hopefully, if it is more frequent it will be used more widely and this will ensure its future.” Opinions remain divided, with
Linda Passmore adding: “This is the only bus service to go directly to the
hospital.Already it’s only about four times a day. If you are ill it means going into town and back out again, making a half-hour journey into a one hour journey. Why can't it ter- minate at the hospital?” The public had untilAugust 11 to
make their comments known to the county council, with responses promised from organisation includ- ing Ryarsh Parish Council and East Malling Matters Facebook group, run by local Lib Dems.A final deci- sion will be taken by KCC’s trans- port cabinet member.
