Warning after site clean-up

PUBLIC-spirited residents who helped to clean up after travellers took over aWest Malling playing field were advised to seek med- ical attention. Parish council vice-chairman Richard Selkirk said: “We are aware of some residents being community-spirited and doing some cleaning up themselves. Al- though we truly appreciate your support, please do not do so as the waste contains some very unpleas- ant material. “Our contractors are profession-

als with all the correct protective equipment, and will do the job in a safe manner. “If youwere one of these people,

please seek advice from the NHS as a precaution. The last thing we would want is for you to become ill.”

Cllr Selkirk confirmed that con- tractors removed the last of “the considerable amount of waste” from the playing field next to the village hall, on Wednesday, July 19.

The field and children’s play

area had re-opened and the public footpath at the back of the field had been cleared. He said that once the council had

tallied up the final bill, it would be published so that residents could see the details. The decision to close the well-

used hall in Norman Road was made by the parish council after about a dozen caravans moved on to the playing field on Sunday, July 9.

They left after a week, following

legal action by the parish and Ton- bridge and Malling councils. All activities at the hall, includ-

ing a nursery school and yoga ses- sions, were cancelled during their stay.

Cllr Selkirk said there were also reports that rabbit traps had been set up in Maceys Meadow – a pop- ular place with families and dog walkers. Some traps had been found and volunteers were check- ing to ensure that there were no more on the site. Meanwhile dog ownerswere ad- vised to keep their pets on leads.

News Watching your speed

A SPEEDWATCH scheme has been introduced in Kings Hill, coordinated by a former Chief Constable of Kent. Drivers’ speeds will be monitored and anyone travelling at 35mph or

more will be reported to the police. If that vehicle is caught speeding again within 12 months anywhere in Kent and Sussex, the driver will receive a letter of advice fromthe police. The equipmentwas bought by

Liberty Property Trust and Kent County Council for use by the community volunteers with the support of the parish council. It will operate in the main roads, including Tower View, Gibson Drive and Discovery Drive. The Speedwatch scheme has

been proven to make drivers think more carefully about their speed. It is an education scheme and not one where people are prosecuted. “We have a rapidly growing population at Kings Hill and the safety of those living, working and visiting here is of paramount importance,” said Liberty’s property and estatemanager Susan Davies. Former Chief Constable of Kent Police, Bob Ayling, who is also a Kings Hill

parish councillor, said: "I would like to thank the volunteers who have undertaken the training and given their time to help make our Kings Hill community a safer place to live and work. The objective is to deter speeding and to educate drivers to behave responsibly. “We do need more volunteers and anyone interested in joining us should

contact the Kings Hill Parish Council Office." Call 01732 870382 or email office@kingshillparish.gov.uk.
