BABY
enters room' slow-mo's, cut-glass characters sparkling with iconic accessories and precision cinematography; strewn with denim, silver hoops and pretty as a picture pouts - screaming 80s throwback, cult
classic.Alegendary soundtrack littered with rockabilly beats, is the cherry topped Knickerbocker glory thatmakes youwant to lick your spoon. But themovie has a heart, and whilst it's energised by top class acting and chases with more rush than Jennifer, it showcases its own power of love; for friends, family, neighbours and even ourselves. Is it over the top? Yes. Is it far-
fetched at times? Absolutely. In fact. it’s obscenely eccentric at times, it’s the kind of super styling that smacks you in the face. Symmetrical cinematography, perfected backdrops can so oftenmake us say ‘blah’...but thesewell thought out scenes are often secretly sarcastic (the Laundromat, where the drums roll almost as colourfully as through Baby’s ear buds). Humour is mirrored in places that either take it
to the edge or drift to the dark side, andmost of the time when you think it’s too deliberate in perfection? It’s intentionally
so.And that’s what gives BabyDriver the kind of beauty that won’t burn out. Ifmy illustration hasn’t painted
enough glow, then forgive the diversion: It’s a
sensation.Astory that is impossible not to enjoy, or understand on one level or another. It’s more than meets the eye. Emotions fly almost as readily as Baby’s back seat riders, ala the porch drop-off scene. His beats give goosebumps, enhancing the edge- of- your- seat visuals ( justwait for Baby's new found 'Focus' scene, switching wheels for a new sort of sprint). The thrill of the chase is always apparent and it’s soaked in enough old-school tomake you cry out for aVHSrelease; Baby Driver is the strawberries and cream of thesummer'17 scene. After all, it’s not the destination, it’s the journey; right?
