AUGUST 2017: ISSUE 101

It was a beautiful Tuesday evening on the 11th July as a group of some 38 members, family and friends gathered outside the West Port Bar in St Andrews in anticipation of the walking quiz they were about to undertake round the town. After forming teams of 3 or 4 everyone received their sheets from organiser Jim Allison and started out to find the answers to the 22 questions set. They set off solving the clues as they went, along South Street, down South Court and back up again, back along South Street, up Crail’s Lane, along Market Street, down Muttoes Lane, along North Street, down Greyfriars Gardens, along Market Street, down City Road and finally through the West Port to our final destination. Most of the clues were not too hard to find, but what was amazing was that there were one or two places where people were heard to say, “I have never noticed that before, and I’ve lived here for n years!” Below you see members Will Aitken and David Sandford solving the clue concerning the wal l plaque at Rogerson’s Shoe Shop on Market Street - At Rogerson’s I wouldn’t have liked to have been in Pavel Kraver’s shoes. What happened to him to make him

I don't fancy that much!

cross? - The poor man had a brass ball put in his mouth and was burned at the stake for heresy. They are again pictured with their wives and Les Wells, pondering this clue - The Blue Stane was reputed to have been the Coronation Stone of Kenneth MacAlpine (843AD). What type of stone is it made of and where can two others be found? - It is made of Dolerite or Whinstone and others can be found at Crai l Kirk and at Clachnacuddin, Inverness. There were many other interesting answers to find and we all enjoyed the chance to walk around the town taking in the sights on a beautiful evening.
