SERVICE ABOVE SELF
AUGUST 2017: ISSUE 101
Fellow Members, My Presidential Year has started and what an honour it is to lead this vibrant club. A big thank you to Ewen for a very successful year. I have a tough act to follow. It has been a very exciting few weeks where new members have joined and there have been a range of community events attended, plus our regular meetings. At the Presidential handover there was the added excitement of inducting a new member, Kyffin Roberts. He is also heavily involved with the Friends of Craigtoun, turning a potential closure into an award winning facility which is open for all to enjoy. As I write this, we have our family visiting and took the opportunity to visit the park, a real jewel. The handout of the prizes at our a n n u a l Hima l a y a s P u t t i n g Competition was one of my first ‘official’ duties. This was a very enjoyable evening with lots of friendly rivalry whilst boosting our charity fund. This event would not happen without the support of the St Andrews Ladies Putting Club who allow us to use their

facilities, so a big thank you to them. At my first full meeting on the 4th July, Bruce Rollo joined our Club. Bruce has transferred from Cupar Rotary and brings over 35 Rotarian years of service and experience with him. A very warm welcome to both our new members. Since it was the 4th July, Wi l l ’s presentation was on the USA and we learned lots of new facts about this significant date. This year we are supporting the Sandcastle competitions organised by the Cosmos Centre. These are held on the West Sands for five Fridays during the summer. I must say that on the 7th July, I had one of the best fun-filled days ever, watching around 70 people – wee tots to grandparents – construct their ‘castle’ before Isobel, Angus and I had to judge. It was not easy as there were many different styles but, after much agonising (I now feel some sympathy for Simon Cowell), we arrived at a decision and formally presented prizes to the winners. The following week, although not judging, I visited the event and thanks to the generosity of the ‘builders’ sold over 40 ducks for the 30th July and our first Charity Duck Race.
