SERVICE ABOVE SELF
AUGUST 2017: ISSUE 101
August is the Charter month for Kilrymont Rotary and this year sees us reach the ripe old age of 21. Angus Peters, one of our founder members, writes of the formation of the Club in 1996.
I joined St Andrews Rotary Club in 1984 but by 1994 I found it was impossible to at tend luncht ime meetings because of wor k pa tte r n s. I reluctantly had to resign a n d i n my l e t t e r I suggested it was perhaps again time to look at forming an evening club. This idea had been mooted a couple of times before but was rejected because it was felt there were enough service clubs in town already. However in 1996 I received a phone call from the late Colin Risk, a very well respected member of the St Andrews Club, who was at that time District Extension Officer, saying that opinions had now changed and it was thought an evening club would be a good idea. He asked if I would like to become involved and I immediately agreed. As the club was not intended to be an ‘old pals club’, I was asked to supply two names of individuals who I thought would be interested. If they proved to be keen, they too would be asked for a further two names. In that way a good nucleus of potential members was created. In August 1996 an Inaugural Dinner was held. Our formal Charter Dinner was held in November of that year. The original Club of f icials were appointed by ourselves, but afterwards, once we got going, we had great help from Colin Risk and George Caithness of the “Mother Club”, both being past District Governors. There were twenty- four Founder Members and only one other,
Ian Lumsdaine, had been a 4
member of the Mother Club. He was Kilrymont’s first Treasurer. We still have five Founder Members in the Club, George Donaldson, John Fernie, who left the Club due to relocat ion but has s ince rejoined, George McIntosh, Gordon Mackenzie and myself. Curiously, the President of the St Andrews Club, at the time I was privileged to be our first President, was the late Bill Cuthi l l who had joined Rotary on the same day as
myself.
It certainly does not seem twenty-one years since it all started.
Even though we have gone through the odd crisis, I feel the Club has come through successfully with flying colours and is in great shape to look forward to the future.

Footnote: We are now all looking forward to our celebration Charter Dinner in the Best Western Scores Hotel on Friday 25th August when we will be joined by various District Officials and other Rotarians and be entertained by guest speaker, Jim Brown MBE and musically talented sisters Katie and Isobel Grieve. Look out for a report on the event next month.
