8 • AUGUST 2017 • UPBEAT TIMES, INC. Travel is Important Upbeat in Kapaa Kauai! by Gabriel A. Fraire ~ gafraire@comcast.net

Healdsburg, CA. ~ Both my daughters were born and raised in Sonoma County and as lovely as it is here there is a whole big world out there. That is why travel is so important. Some things are just better learned through experience.

There is tru- ly something magical about the first time a child sees snow; that little hand stretched out hoping a flake

would land, the head tilted back with mouth open try- ing to catch one, the glee on their face with their first sled ride or the tiny terror in the

eyes as they try to glide on ice skates.

My parents believed travel was a great educator and they passed that philosophy unto me, thus we traveled a lot with our children and each time was a new and ex- citing adven- ture.

There were a few moments that required us to explain why our chil- dren appeared

to be behaving strangely, like the time we were visiting family in the Midwest during the summer and it began to rain. All the adults and other

children rushed inside to stay dry. Not our daughters. They stayed in the rain and began dancing and playing and prancing about like fairies in a rainforest.

My brother asked, “What’s with your kids?” I explained that where we live the rain is always cold. My daughters had never felt warm rain. It can be a challenge to

travel with children but it is well worth it. It is the best educator.

Gabriel A. Fraire has been a writer more than 45 years. He has written fiction and non-fiction books, plays, po- ems, music lyrics, and news articles. But, he writes about his children exclusively for the Upbeat Times.

Becky & Len just returned from two weeks in Kapaa Kauai. Of course they had their Upbeat Times!!! Kapaa is on the eastern (windward) side of Kauai and has the largest population concen- tration on the island. The downtown is popular with tourists as it has a many shops and restaurants. One of their favorite eateries is Chicken-in-a-Barrel serving several types of bar-b-que meats.

lay siege to, it is a battle like a game of go. I will take hold of all the pain and snuff it out.”
