UPBEAT TIMES, INC. • AUGUST 2017 • 21 Living the Upbeat Life Stress-Busting ~ Part # 1

SANTA ROSA, CA. ~ Ever try to point at “stress”? It’s not ‘out there.’ It’s an inside job, a result of the re- lationship between a perceived threat to something you value, and uncer- tain whether you can avoid it. What you be- lieve is ‘real’ will also determine the kind or degree of stress you experience.

Years

ago I put together an actual “Stress-Buster’s Survival Kit” as a pre- sentation for students. Wanna try it out?

BALLOON and PEN: Identify/target your particular stress or dilemma. Blow up the balloon to represent how ‘big’ it seems. Write its name on the balloon. How have you felt about it in your life?

PIN: Imagine taking back your power to bust the stress and lighten things up with positive action. Bust the balloon, feeling into the power for activating your good.

FLASHLIGHT: A device to help you see your way through the dark, the unknowns. The batteries are your courage, will. In a pinch, call on the ‘light’ of truth to come and guide you through.

FEATHER: Whether from a hawk, dove, crow or duck, a lucky feather will help you to remember having wings, fl ying above the dramas, cri- ses, heartaches.

LIDDED “Critic Catcher” JAR: An effective jail for any overly caustic Inner Critic. Get into the habit of noticing this deprecating ‘voice’ in your head, its job of shaming you with its litany of how imperfect, in- adequate, bumbling and undeserv- ing you are. Snare the Critic and stuff it in the jar, fastening the lid on tight. (Repeat, whenever It gets loose, and you’re entertaining Its worried or punitive perspectives again. Put a lid on It.)

DREAMING MIRROR: On the back of a hand mirror, write the

general words, “my special Dream,” or name a particular Desire of yours. Practice looking into your dreaming mirror with loving, appreciating eyes that see not the Critic’s ‘imperfec- tions’, but into your soulfulness, spirit- edness, and special- ness. This allows your Dreams to naturally be more available to manifesting.

SMALL (heavy) and LARGE (lightweight) PICTURE FRAMES: “Reframe” any per-

ceived dilemma-drama or negative ‘reality.’ Let the small, heavier, lim- iting frame be the perception that there’s no good way out, as if the world is against small, powerless you. Can you name any underlying beliefs making you so anxious? Now, take the larger, lighter frame and cre- atively fi nd new takes on the situa-

tion: what’s the opportunity awaiting you here? What could be a gift in all this? Practice viewing life’s diffi cul- ties as opportunities for greater well being. After a few success notches in your belt, you’ll naturally trust your- self more, and see life as more sup- portive to your causes.

PACIFIER(s): “P-A-C” comes from the Latin word for ‘peace.’ What pacifi es you, truly invites peaceful- ness?

What nurtures, invigorates

and restores you? (Contrary to what your Critic might think, you deserve it). Let your imagination carry you, creating tranquil, soothing scenarios. Your body will respond to your invit- ing thoughts by relaxing and letting go of tensions.

Marvel at the way your bodymind works. It’s phys- iologically impossible to be ‘stressed’ and anxiety ridden while breathing free and fully at the same time!
