Drought Tolerant Plants Advice for gardeners from Chestnut Nursery
I think you will agree that the weather has been glorious! The nursery is looking
fantastic and our extensive range of
plants are blossoming
with vigour and health. The warm summer conditions mean that watering demands can be very high. With much of the soils in Poole being so very sandy and dry, we grow a large range of plants to suit. Three of our favourites this year are:
Bupleurum fruticosum or ‘shrubby hare’s ear’ (pictured), an excellent Mediterranean evergreen shrub for wind-swept positions near the sea. Not fussy about soil types, it will grow to two metres but can be cut back hard to promote fresh growth. It has pleasing blue-green foliage and umbels of yellow fl owers in summer and early autumn.
Ozothamnus ‘Threave seedling’ from south east Australia is a fast growing upright to rounded, dense, evergreen shrub with tiny, linear, aromatic, dark grey-green leaves and dense clusters of red buds opening to fragrant, white fl owers in early summer. Very drought tolerant once established, ideal for windy coastal gardens.
Buddleja glomerata or ‘Karoo sage’ is endemic to the mountains of the Karoo desert in South Africa, where it grows among boulders on dry hillsides. It is an attractive foliage plant with silvery, scalloped leaves and heads of yellow fl owers during spring and summer. It forms a small tree or bushy, upright shrub.
