DEAN CURTIS FOR LIVING WELL MAGAZINE House boats are just one of several items available for rent at Bull Shoals Boat Dock.

they come 3-5 days, everyone has cut back a little. People are still taking vacations, but not as elaborate,” he said.

They have a plethora of boats to choose from and the houseboats are popular because it offers lodging and boating at the same time.

In 1996, they expanded from the marina business and went into lodging; they own Lighthouse Resort which offers a variety of accommodations. They also offer packages — sort of like Travelocity —where people can combine lodging and boat rentals.

“Everything was from a demand standpoint. Spear fishing is legal for certain species of fish, so we offered it. There was a demand for scuba because the water is clear. People asked about paddleboards,

so we added it. We added sailboats at one time, but that didn’t work. If we don’t have it, we’ve probably already tried it and decided not to do it,” he said.

His goal is to maintain the business, not necessarily grow it because they have as much as they can handle. Before his dad’s death, John was incredibly proud of the marina he had built.

“The classic American risk-taking family that came from dirt farmers and grew into multimillion dollar business, still way in debt,” he said. “They didn’t have anything when they started. It’s the classic American dream story.”
