That tradition continues in Mountain View where opportunities abound for live performances.


Daren Dortin, music director at Ozark Folk Center State Park and executive producer of Ozark Highlands Radio, said Thursday through Saturday nights from spring through fall, musicians gather on the square to play.


“That has been going on for years and years. Throughout the week there are all manners of people playing music. The court square is similar to any small town with a courthouse in the middle and square around it. That has been a popular gathering spot to musician dating back to the ’40s. There were a number of folk festivals in the ’70s and Mountain View gained notoriety for folk music. There is a


music store on the court square, a picking park with some gazebos where people gather to play,” Dortin said.


While there are spontaneous performances throughout the week, Dortin wanted to fill a void on Sundays when there is not much going on, so the first Sunday of the month, now through October, is Sunday Court Square Music Concert Series, on the east side of the courthouse.


The bands play from 2-3 p.m., and then at 3 p.m., bands host a free pickin’ session so bring an instrument and join in if you have one.


“The series was originally started four years ago to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Ozark Folk Center State Park in 2013,” said Dortin. The idea was we held the concerts at various locations throughout Stone County that were popular spots where people
