Illinois, John Eastwold hauled hay for a man who owned a cabin on Bull Shoals Lake and told John he could use the cabin when wanted. Eastwold fell in love with the area, and as an adult, started bringing his family down on vacation.

When the company Eastwold worked for merged with another and cut half its workforce, Eastwold’s job was among those lost.

He had $15,000 and a dream of starting his own business so he headed back to his favorite vacation spot on Bull Shoals Lake. Eastwold looked at a few venues for sale and found a marina.

His family followed him to Arkansas and on May 1, 1972, they opened Bull Shoals Lake Boat Dock.

ull Shoals Lake Boat Dock is a tangible example of the American dream.

As a farm boy in

100 stalls, one ski boat, two pontoons and 25 fishing boats,” said his son Ricky Eastwold, who owns the marina with his brother, Steve. “Now we have 700 stalls, 15 pontoons, 10 ski boats, six bass boats, 13 houseboats and then various other things like wave runners, paddleboards, tubes and dive shop. My brother also runs and maintains a sales-and-repair shop. We have five mechanics, sell different boats and have a very large retail sales and repair shop.”

With more over 1,050 miles of shoreline, Bull Shoals Lake is the largest in Arkansas. It spans north central Arkansas and south central Missouri. Visitors love it for the fishing, pristine waters, low boat traffic and wide channels. Summer in north central Arkansas can only mean one thing: It’s time to enjoy the water.

Even though Lake of the Ozarks — one of Missouri’s premier lakes — is nearby, Jennifer Dacus and her boyfriend, Steve Krull, make the 4-and-a-half hour trek to Bull Shoals from St. Louis.
