Local Teacher To Enter Aquathlon World Championships

Three years ago I decided to challenge myself and sign up to participate in an Ironman triathlon (2.8km swim, 180km bike, 42.2km run/marathon) as part of a fund raising effort for Macmillan Cancer Research. I had never participated in anything like it in the past. The commitment to successfully complete Ironman sparked a passion for multi-sport racing and I began racing more events.

As a ‘normal, everyday person off the street’, with all the usual committments of a demanding professional career and with three young children, I saw this as just a pipe-dream. However, over the last few years I have committed to as much training as life will allow, and have enjoyed considerable success at a variety of multi-sport races.

On Saturday 27th May I made my international age-group debut (for non-elite, but high performing athletes), racing the European Aquathlon Championships in Bratislava, Slovakia. The race went better than I could have ever imagined, I fi nished 7th overall in age-group and was the

2nd GB athlete, earning automatic qualifi cation to the

2018 European Championships in Ibiza. The next challenge is to raise suffi cient funds to make it to the World Championships in Canada this August.

Racing at age-group level is entirely self-funded and does not come cheap due to the

entry fees, race licenses, fl ights, accommodation, equipment, affi liation fees, insurances,

training, coaching, etc. So, I am reaching out to potential individuals and companies who may be able to offer funding and/or sponsorship. Any and all contributions would be hugely appreciated: www.gofundme.com/ davidwoodgbaquathlete.

I hope that attending these events will inspire my children, my students, and young people within the local community to strive for great things and shows them that dedication and hard work pays off.
