Broadstone Neighbourhood Watch
A survey earlier this year found that only 58% of people regularly lock their homes when they go out, almost half of those with a burglar alarm do not activate it routinely and most don’t change their locks if a set of keys has been lost. Whilst burglaries are becoming less common, we have seen a number of them here in Broadstone – including at least one where the residents were in the property at the time.
Many crimes are carried out by opportunists and locked doors will put many thieves off at the fi rst hurdle, with them moving onto an ‘easier’ target. Other off-putting factors include gravel drives, dogs and valuable items being out of sight; whereas open windows, unlocked cars and overgrown paths that give ‘cover’ attract intruders.
Aggressive begging and intimidation by rough sleepers in Broadstone appears to be on the rise and Police have asked me to share their latest advice. Rough sleeping and the sight of a cup to collect spare change is a sad but increasingly common sight, but is not illegal. Asking for money, or begging, is an offence but is usually ignored by the police where it causes no distress or is polite.
Abuse, intimidation or harassment of those who don’t donate will be treated as a potential criminal

activity and the police have asked that residents call 101 to make a
complaint if they are abused, or see such activity. At the time of writing there have been some complaints but not suffi cient to take action, so if you have been affected, please call 101 or use the
police.uk website to make a report.
In my role as Ward Councillor I have also made contact with the Borough of Poole Anti-Social Behaviour team for them to monitor the situation.
The current advice is not to give to rough sleepers – in the form of money, food or other items as this helps to sustain the problem. There is currently a crackdown on aggressive begging elsewhere in Poole so if we ‘feed the habit’ we run the risk of making Broadstone a beacon for other rough sleepers who see us as a soft target.
If you want to help, the advice is to support local homeless charities (Routes to Roots, YMCA or AOK Rucksack Appeal), who can provide services to the individuals concerned and help them back into society.
