Industry News Kennedy's Bakery Production Ferrero responds to concerns over Nutella

The manufacturers of Nutella have moved to reassure consumers that the brand is safe, following claims its ingredients may cause cancer.

Ferrero has insisted there are no health concerns surrounding its renowned spread, in response to a European Food Safety report into the use of palm oil.

According to the study, such oils – which are one of the key ingredients in Nutella, contain contaminants at high temperature that can occur during refining processes.

However, the report – which did not name the Ferrero’s chocolate and hazelnut spread by name, said that further research was required.

As a result, some stores in Italy have ceased stocking Nutella, denting its sales. Ferrero has responded with an ad campaign to address concerns, with sales reportedly picking up 4% in the final quarter of last year.

Since 2015, the company has achieved 100% certifica- tion for sustainably sourced palm fruit oil in its products.

Photo A. Kniesel On its website, the manu-

facturer describes the use of such oils in society over the past 10,000 years. It stated that it is widely used in cook- ing in Southeast Asia, Africa, and areas of Brazil.

A spokesperson for Ferrero said: “The health and safety of consumers is an absolute and first priority for Ferrero and we confirm that our products are safe.

“The EFSA (European Food

Safety Authority) has analysed the presence of contaminants in a large number of products and oils, stating that the pres- ence of contaminants depends on the oils and fats used, as well as the processes they are subjected to. It is for this reason that Ferrero carefully selects quality raw materials and applies specific indus- trial processes that limit their presence to minimum levels, fully in line with the parameters

defined by the EFSA.

“In addition, our quality teams constantly monitor such factors and guarantee the food safety of our products to the consumer. Furthermore, Ferrero has launched a campaign in Italy to celebrate its 70 year anniversary, as well as its passion for quality in selecting and combining the best ingredients, such as palm oil, cocoa and hazelnuts.”
