Smoking tobacco has increased amongst young women in the population

The benefits of quitting are noticed from the first moment of stopping and continue gradually over time.

Quirónsalud Torrevieja hospital has conducted free tests to measure the level of carbon monoxide from smoking, to mark the occasion of world no smoking day, with the goal of emphasising the importance of prevention and early detection of diseases associated with tobacco consumption. Everyone who underwent this test received a gift of an aromatic plant and advice of our specialists to kick this habit.

Among the multiple risks of tobacco are the occurrence of diseases through changes in the response of cells due to the more than 4,000 harmful chemicals. This sometimes involves the appearance of tumours and, in other cases, death of cells and disruption due to rupture and degeneration of body tissues. Among the most important illnesses is lung cancer. In fact, a smoker has between 5 and 20 times higher risk of developing lung, larynx, oesophagus and bladder cancer than a non-smoker. Also coronary diseases, such as angina pectoris or heart attack, and cerebrovascular diseases, peripheral artery occlusion and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It also worsens or hinders the healing of inflammatory and infectious pulmonary diseases.

The benefits of giving up smoking

According to the latest national health survey, 24% of the population over 15 years of age smoke daily, even though the data obtained shows smoking has decreased slightly in all population groups, it shows a slight increase in young women.

According to Dr. Dick Pasker, hospital pulmonologist Quirónsalud Torrevieja, "After the first 20 minutes without smoking, the heart rate and blood pressure values return to normal levels. Between eight and twenty-four hours the blood regulates the levels of carbon monoxide and oxygen. Between two and four days after giving up the sense of taste and smell recover remarkably. Two months later, lung capacity begins to improve when physical exercise is performed. Three months later the symptoms of physical addiction disappear. Between three and six months there is a remarkable psychological improvement. From the first day there is already a lower risk of thrombosis or myocardial infarction. After 4 years the risk of myocardial infarction is almost equal to that of someone who has never smoked. Bronchial symptoms are reduced or disappear. By ten years the risk of lung cancer decreases to less than half."
