FAST RISING PROPERTY BUSINESS WINNER – PAUL BASHAM ASSOCIATES

This award recognised star businesses rapidly making their mark in either commercial or residential sectors.

The trio of aspiring finalists were:

• FWS Properties – a growing property investment business transforming run-down houses into multiple-occupancy quality homes.

• Paul Basham Associates – its Oxford office opened last year and is now working with 42 clients on 86 projects.

• RARE – based at Reading’s Green Park, Real Asset Real Estate is handling some of the biggest clients and instructions in Reading and the Thames Valley.

This category was sponsored by Romans Group, itself a fast-growing property business. Group managing director Peter Kavanagh presented the winner’s trophy.

Roads to success

This multi-disciplinary transport planning, travel planning, highway design and civil engineering consultancy, with offices in Oxford and Southampton, was established in October 2009, and has built relationships, invested in developing young talent, and increased turnover year-on-year.

An award-winner’s reaction

“This is an incredible award for us. We just try to do our honest best and provide a good service at the right price. Our fantastic staff are

all dedicated to the cause of client delivery and we have an extended family within our offices. That’s a key to our success really,” said business founder Paul Basham.

“Most of our work comes from private sector developments – residential commercial, retail and leisure – but planning applications are going up, the market is incredibly confident, and we are now getting involved with some cracking strategic sites and delivering new link roads, by-passes, major junction improvements and smaller projects as well, so these are exciting times for us.

“We are looking to recruit, but we are massively restricted in terms of our growth by the available resource out there,” admitted Basham. Accordingly, the company invests in its staff, has its own graduate training programme, and likes to promote from within.

Activity that impressed the judging panel

Announcing the winner, Vail Williams partner David Thomas described Blandy & Blandy as “a very active property team, punching above its weight.”

Deals and dedication bring winning delight

Blandy & Blandy advised on over £250 million of development land deals in the year, including the £100m Shinfield West disposal for University of Reading, and Thames Tower’s first letting to Austin Fraser. The firm has doubled the number of partners in its team in the past three years. It also has a dedicated planning team, one of the top 20 in the UK.

Well-deserved recognition

The judges said there were some exceptional entries in this category. Contending this prized title were:

• Blandy & Blandy – a respected Reading team, growing significantly and working on many multi-million-pound property deals.

• B P Collins – a strong reputation for advising major corporates and with a big portfolio of retail, leisure and residential instructions.

• Charles Russell Speechlys – a 40-strong department in Guildford with the largest construction team in the south.

• Pitmans Law – its real-estate practice is one of the biggest and most respected in the south and property is one of Pitmans’ key specialisms.

“It’s fantastic to be regarded as one of the top property law firms in the region. We’ve always believed in ourselves, and finally we have been recognised for the size and nature of the deals that we do,” said Jane Gunnell, head of property for Blandy & Blandy who spoke of a growing firm and clientbase.

“We quietly work away in Reading, but now here we are with this award and we are really, really pleased.”

Several team members have been trained within the firm, but Blandy & Blandy also recruits from outside to produce a mixture of talent and experience – a winning mixture it appears. “We’re doing well,” added Gunnell.
