Mountain View’s

name derives from its location in a valley bor- dered by the Blue Moun- tain Range of the Ozark Mountains. It was in- corporated on August 14, 1890. Two major festivals

dominate the Mountain View calendar, the Ozark Folk Festival and the Arkansas Bean Fest and Great Championship Outhouse Races. Held every April, the Ozark Folk Festival features a parade, folk craft ven- dors and live folk music. During the last week of October, nearly one ton of pinto beans are cooked up in large, an- tique kettles along the court square and free beans and cornbread are

served to the crowd. The festival continues with the Outhouse Race, where teams of partici- pants push outhouses built on wheels (similar to a go-kart) in a series of races. Handmade crafts and folk music also play an integral role in this festival. Other local events include the Mountain View Blue- grass Festival, held in both mid-March and mid-November; an Old- Fashioned Fourth of July held July 3-4; and the Ozark Mountain Christ- mas, held throughout the month of December. The latter festival features the lighting of the town Christmas tree and the lighting of the downtown square. The Ozark Folk Cen-

ter plays host to several events throughout the
