Solee but is still very much their own. It’s bookended by the album’s two best tracks in my opinion.

Multi-instrumentalist Cooper Mc- Bean takes an infrequent lead vocal turn on Kristofferson’s Chase The Feeling and nails it. It is a brilliant song that the band and guests cover superbly. A great baritone guitar solo, moody pedal steel by Don Dugmore, and thrumming bass and drums propel it atmospherically to the lyrical ruinous end result. Then there’s their slowed down, chilling take on Town Van Zandt’s Wait- ing Around To Die. Sinister harmonica by ace Mickey Raphael opens it - slink- ing around Lucia Turino’s standup bass and Pete Bernhard’s vocals - and then the rest of the band joins in. If they take a few liberties with the lyrics they certainly give it the gravitas and anguish some other versions lack. Emmylou Harris is distinctive on background vocals.

The Redemption side is more posi-

tive, obviously. Starting with the joyful There’ll Be A Jubilee, the band puts their stamp on old time gospel, country and bluegrass classics adroitly. The rol- licking I Am The Man Thomas, driven by great spoon work from guest percus- sionist Jerry Roe and blazing fiddle by Chance McCoy, one of four fiddlers used, rolls into Wait’s Come On Up To The House.

The Monroe Brother’s What Would

You Give (In Return For Your Soul) is treated with the respect it merits, as is the spiritually infused traditional Down in the Valley. Lovely playing and har- monies abound on both. Closing out this fine album is Hank Williams Sr.’s The Angel Of Death. With legend Duane Eddy on guitar and sweet pedal and steel guitar interplay, fiddle, bass and vocals all blend wonderfully celebrating the ultimate redemption.

Celebrate sin and welcome sal-

vation! The Devil Makes Three and friends do so excellently on Redemption & Ruin. Well-chosen songs that span decades and multiple genres present both sides of the coin. Sorrow and woe, joy and contentment intermingled. That’s what life is, after all.
