reading pleasure - enjoy! The Golden

Spruce - Jon Vaillant: This was a re-read after a friend had returned from Haida Gwaii (formerly the Queen

Charlotte Islands) and borrowed my copy. Entranced by the islands - and the story - she enjoyed the book immensely, as I did a second time. Vaillant weaves an incomparable tale, the end game unresolved to this day, around the actions of a renegade and the subsequent repercussions. Toss in observations of life on the edge of the Pacific, First Nations history/culture, the story of BC coastal logging and you’ve got a book that is a pleasure to read. Compellingly true, vibrant, Vaillant’s account of what drove an “environmentalist” to his decisive action has it all: mystery, history, intrigue and mythology. A Visit From the Goon Squad

- Jennifer Egan: Don’t let the somewhat silly title fool you. It’s a bravura account of growing up, becoming adult, the ravages of time and how it all links and flows together. A Pulitzer prize winner, hailed by critics as “an instant American classic”, Egan’s sweet, sardonic and oh-so-clever account of amateur punk musicians learning, growing and entering early middle age - along with the expected trials, joys, drama and setbacks - is a pleasure to read. Characters intermingle, popping up in other chapters or phases of life, all while being crazily non-conformist then confounding ordinary and blasé as time - the goon squad of the title - takes its toll. Many of us have been there already.

www.bounder.ca Mule - Stephen

D’Souza: An easy read, it’s an engaging story about the pressures, perils and pleasures of cross-continental

weed smuggling. It is a fictional account, but no doubt much of what Esquire/New Yorker writer D’Souza spins as a tale happens all the time. His account is riveting. The first trip our mule takes is fraught with nerves jangled at the edge of sanity, trying to remember everything, the do’s and don’ts as you drive across the country with enough weed in your vehicle to get you put away for a very

long time. Certainly in the US of A. D’Souza leads us through the highs and lows of the mule. The ecstatic euphoria when all goes well and the nerve-wracking, gut-wrenching feeling when things go sour. It’s like he’s taken the drive himself, without the scary bad shit that happens to our man on one of his many cross- country sojourns. Thankfully it’s fiction. The Lacuna - Barbara

The Holidays Various Well, leading up to and over the holidays - as winter set in seriously - I had lots of time to

peruse the local library, get a few literary selections as gifts and log some quality reading time. A lack of work contracts and a good couch aided and abetted! The titles here are quick snapshots of some of the books read, passed on for your potential
